BEAU GESTE

All I really have to say on this one is........

If you did not read it - do so.

It starts with a bang and finishes off nicely. I loved the adventure, the romance, the mystery. Because I'm not sure if/when anyone else read it (or is in process) I don't want to say too much about it.

I bought an additional copy to give to my brother-in-law for his birthday. He'll love it.

So will you.

I found that Gary Cooper did a Beau Geste movie but I haven't watched it yet as I haven't been able to get my hands on the book. I'm on the waiting list..

Anyhow, I love Gary Cooper so that will be fun. Even if I have to watch it and pretend it has nothing to do with the book, as I so often do!

I want to see the movie, too, and see what they did with it! (I happened to buy a copy off of half.com or someplace and it had the movie cover on it. I'm waiting for Jonathan to have a chance to read the book first though. I think you, in particular, Sky, will love this book. It's right up your alley. Can't wait to hear what you think of it!

This is a truly wonderful book! I discovered it only a few years ago and have read it through several times since. It was one of the books I read aloud to Michael on our honeymoon. For months after reading it, I went around saying 'Oh, jolly good' and 'Good egg!'

I LOVE the British slang! It's so charming and delightful, and their humour is always so dry and understated.

The glory of their chivalric notions of grandeur in the French Foreign Legion is intoxicating. Pretty eye-opening to see what it was really like. Very WWI-ish, where the bright young things went off merrily to war and fame and glory, little dreaming what lay before them.

Of course, the mystery and intrigue were very nicely played. So too the romance, which could have dragged the book down but which was played so melodramatically as to be funny and sweet. Plus that hardly came into the plot.

I can't possibly do this book justice, so I just hope everyone gets a chance to read it eventually. The sequels, Beau Sabreur and Beau Ideal, while not quite as good as the first, are nevertheless very enjoyable.

I love Beau Geste! I read it with my bro-in-law and two sisters on a road trip. Some of the best fun I've ever had!
